SECR - Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting

From April 2019, certain companies will need to comply with SECR. This is the UK Government’s revised approach to annual carbon reporting and combines/simplifies previous carbon reporting systems.

SECR is a part of a company’s annual Directors Report/accounts submitted to Companies House and has to be repeated annually.

SECR is different to ESOS as it looks at what energy efficiency measures you have carried out in the year, not what you could carry out in the future.

How can Enica help with SECR

Enica are ready to help with your annual SECR reporting and compliance.

Does your organisation need to comply?

SECR generally applies to larger organisations and quote companies. You will need to comply with SECR if you 2 out of 3 of the following:

  • >250 employees

  • Turnover of £36 Million or more

  • Balance Sheet of £18 Million or more

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

SECR is an annual reporting mechanism, just like submitting company accounts.

If your organisation needs to comply, then Enica can help. Here’s our approach to compliance:

STEP 1: Understand your organisation’s company structure. We can usually help by exploring public Companies House records for this. SECR may apply across various subsidiary companies, so we need to understand how your organisation or group is structured.

STEP 2: Understand how many UK sites your organisation has and whether transport activities need to be included.

STEP 3: Collect your energy consumption and transport data. This typically includes Scope 1 & 2 emissions, and likely includes electricity, gas and other energy sources that your organisation uses as well as transport fuel. The objective is to collect data on 100% of your energy consumption.

STEP 4: Conversion of the energy and fuel consumption data into CO2 emissions (Greenhouse gas emissions)

STEP 5: Develop suitable energy intensity metrics or KPIs such as kWh per m2 floor area.

STEP 6: Detail a report showing the energy efficency measures that your company has carried out in the financial year or if non, explain why.

STEP 7: Incorporate the SECR information within your annual Directors Report submitted to Companies House.

Enica can deliver all of the steps needed for compliance.
